Sirs,
Am currently in the UK and am planning to relocate to chennai and open an independent physio clinic.I need details regarding opening a private clinic-especially the pre requisites.I have 2 years experience and have colleagues who can work for me and are more experienced than me.As am residing now in the UK,how long will it take for me to get registered with the IAP?do i need to get registered legally with these associations before i start a clinic?or is that ok if i can apply for these registrations after i start my clinic?Details needed please..
August 3rd, 2008 at 8:43 am
The current details about the process of joining IAP can be obtained from the respective website
http://www.physiotherapyindia.org
To start an independent Physiotherapy clinic in India or even otherwise to practise as Physiotherapist in any part of India, one’s professional qualification should be at least a graduate from a recognised university. As of date no special permission is required from any authority to start a clinic except for the municipal regulations (for commercial usage of the premises where one intends to practise) that vary from state to state.
August 3rd, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Param,
Thank you very much for the details..Are u running your own clinic in India? What else should i look into, before i start a clinic there?other than municipal regulations, are there any auditing (CA) and legal issues to deal with, like having the name board registered for the clinic etc..Any details will be much helpful.

As I already mentioned, to practise as Physiotherapist in India, all you need to have is a recognized professional qualification only. This serves as your licence to practise. Once you start practising, it is upto you to get your firm registered but all this may be required at later stages as you grow and is optional. The IAP membership is also optional but certainly adds to your professional image.
So come back home, start a clinic with good professional equipments and interiors… all you need to practise here is a desire to serve people.

Just a clarification.I called up few of my seniors who own a clinic in chennai to get few details about setting up the clinic, and everyone are asking me to get IAP registration first as clinic cannot be started without IAP registration.Am seriously confused, regarding this. They say one cannot start a clinic without that and if we run a clinic without it,its likely to get caught in inspection blah blah blah !!.I seriously wonder why on earth should these guys must worry if they have genuine qualifications necessary or what they say is right??I have my BPT from the tamilnadu Dr.MGR medical university and also additional acupuncture qualifications. It will be better if IAP people throw some light on this..and whats that inspection thing… whats that all about!!!help me out with the answers guys..
August 7th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Padma . . . I think you are being misguided. You just need a recognized qualification (at least a bachelor’s) in Physiotherapy from an Indian University to practise as Physiotherapist. Rest all is of no value. The membership of IAP is an optional thing and it is a private body. Our council is not yet functional and once the government passes some rule wherein we need to be registered with the council, then I can agree that we need council membership before starting a clinic but till now, it’s just your qualification that matters.

Hi Everyone,
I saw a lot of confusion among readers here and thought I can share something. Param has rightly mentioned that we need not require any special permission from any regulatory authority (except the municipal permissions of using the premises for commercial use). Many of my friends are qualified Physiotherapists and do not even have the IAP membership and are still practising.

i want to know that is it necessary to have IAP affilition for internship in private hospitals specially..
August 16th, 2008 at 6:44 am
“i want to know that is it necessary to have IAP affilition for internship in private hospitals specially.. ” . . . . .
NOT AT ALL .. . . . Try and understand that IAP is a private professional body (association).

hi i have lot of confusion, is there any necessary for registration of delhi council of physiotherpy as i m in delhi if we go for iap registration also , whether we need to registar for each state to work in a particular state in india
August 19th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Hello Prabha
The Delhi Physiotherapy Council registration is a beneficial thing if you are intending to practise in Delhi. I am not completely aware if the registration with the council is mandatory as of date but since it is a government body, I would recommend that If you qualify, do apply for the council registration.
August 19th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
is IAP certification needed to practice in australia? or to get registered? any ideas?
September 1st, 2008 at 10:47 am
I am a BPT from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. I am a life member of IAP also. Presently I am based at Kolkata. Working and practising over there. I might shift to Delhi in near future. I understand that Delhi has got an independent Physiotherapy Council and it is mandatory for any practising Physiotherapist in Delhi to get their name registered with the said Council. I have no idea how to go about it. Can somebody guide me as to how one can get this registration, contact address,. phone etc. of the Council etc.

Hi There,
I would like to open a Physiotherapy clinic in Hyderabad, India. Can anyone please suggest me what are the legal requirements to open a clinic? Specifically do i need to get registered with IAP in order to open a private clinic? As i am not yet registered with IAP, but i still have a professional recognised qualification. Is that sufficient?
Can anyone tell me the website for information about opening a private physio clinic in Hyderabad?
September 4th, 2008 at 7:46 am
Your present qualification is sufficient. There is no such website offering guidance on private physio clinics.
September 11th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
i am passed 12th class my age is 28 at this time i can’t do mbbs but i wat to open my own clinic so what is the prou\edure to open my clinic
September 13th, 2008 at 9:07 am
Hi there,
Thanks for the reply. Now, i understand that my qualification is sufficient to open a physio clinic in India.
But few of my seniors who have their own clinics have told me that IAP registration is compulsory?
Is that true?
I also checked the IAP website but there was no information that IAP is compulsory.
Can anyone please tell me the exact information?
September 13th, 2008 at 9:15 am
It is not compulsory. But it helps. In India we do not have any Phisiotherapy Council as yet, although efforts are on and we may get it in near future. Till that time, IAP registration is acting as some sort of regulatory mechanism. Physio community in India gives lot of importance in IAP registration. But, it is not compulsory. Hope, this clarifies the position.

sir,
i have completed BPT under AAI-DU from guwahati.i want to know nthat would i able to be a member of iap or sit in the exam for associated membership.
i will be very gerateful to you if you kindly send me the infomation.

nilutpal gogoi
assam
September 13th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Hi.
Does AAI stand for Allahbad Aggricultural University? If yes then I am sorry to say that this university is not considered as a recognized university for physiotherapy qualification by IAP. They had also filed a case against AAU to discontinue their distance learning program (I am not aware of the current status) Thus, you will not be allowed to appear for the IAP membership examination. But nilutpal, do not loose heart and check with the IAP people for more details about how can you make things right for you career.
September 14th, 2008 at 8:54 am
Ok, I understood that IAP Registration is not compulsory. If i open a Private Clinic on my own (without the IAP Registration currently), can i employ another BPT Graduate who can work under my Clinical Supervision?
September 16th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
sir , is physical therapy is equivalent to mbbs
September 16th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
MBBS and Physiotherapy are totally different areas of practise and approach. Please do not get confused.

hi to everyone…tere r really lot of confusions regarding iap..do u know wen ll v get a council…is tere any latest news regarding tis..is goverment taking any steps…v have to be valued for our course
November 21st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Hi priya,..
I think we will have to have a lot of patience before we can get our rights completely and practise more professionally…
Even I am continously seeking news about Indian council taking necessary steps for Physios. It is very evident from this board that individual PT’s are greatly confused about how to proceed once they become independent and even students are not being guided properly. It seems the government is paying a deaf ear to our problems. But as of now. . . no news!
